What Are Grapevine and La Viña?

AA Grapevine is the international journal of Alcoholics Anonymous. First published in 1944, Grapevine shares the experience, strength, and hope of AA members through stories about recovery, the Twelve Steps, Twelve Traditions, sponsorship, service, AA history, and living sober.

La Viña is AA Grapevine’s Spanish-language magazine. Published every two months, La Viña carries the same AA message through stories and experiences from Spanish-speaking AA members.

The stories in Grapevine and La Viña are written primarily by AA members. They represent the experiences and opinions of individual members and are not statements of AA policy.

Both magazines are self-supporting through subscriptions and the sale of related materials.

What Does a Grapevine or La Viña Representative Do?

The Grapevine Representative (GVR) and La Viña Representative (RLV) help connect their AA group with Grapevine and La Viña.

A representative can:

  • Give brief Grapevine/La Viña announcements at meetings.

  • Display current magazines, books, and information at the group.

  • Let members know about new books, magazines, digital resources, and special projects.

  • Encourage members to submit their own recovery stories, artwork, photographs, and humor.

  • Encourage subscriptions to Grapevine and La Viña.

  • Share information about the Grapevine and La Viña mobile apps. For information about the app <click here>. 

  • Share information from the District and Area Grapevine/La Viña committees.

A group elects its own Grapevine/La Viña representative. The position is a great opportunity for members interested in AA literature, communication, and service.

Ideas for Your Home Group

There are many simple ways your group can use Grapevine and La Viña:

Create a Grapevine/La Viña display. Keep recent issues, books, subscription information, and free materials where members can see them.

Use stories in meetings. Consider an occasional Grapevine or La Viña topic meeting based on a story about Steps, Traditions, sponsorship, service, or another recovery topic.

Carry the message. Groups can provide magazines or subscriptions to newcomers, treatment facilities, correctional facilities, homebound members, or other alcoholics who may benefit.

Encourage members to write. Every AA member has a story. Grapevine and La Viña welcome submissions from members sharing their experience, strength, and hope.

Give a subscription. Through the Carry the Message Project, members and groups can help provide Grapevine or La Viña subscriptions to alcoholics who need them.
